Against the sun-bleached streets of St Kilda, Australia, ‘Joel and Aubrey’ follows two victims of traumatized childhoods as they navigate their relationship through the trials of their respective pasts. Joel, a former criminal trying to shed his violent history, works at a cinema to keep a low profile and create an honest life for himself. However, he finds it difficult to shake off his old habits and ways of thinking, particularly when it comes to Aubrey, his partner of seven years. Feeling their relationship stagnate, Joel becomes increasingly paranoid that she has been unfaithful.
Meanwhile, Aubrey is grappling with her own demons, struggling with the guilt of her infidelity to Joel with his best friend, Griff, and the memories of childhood abuse at the hands of her foster parents. She finds herself at a crossroads, torn between finding closure and seeking answers, and stopping her destructive behavior.
In a bold attempt to reignite their relationship, Joel convinces Aubrey to join him in confronting her foster parents, however, it takes a fatal turn. Setting off a dangerous and intense series of events that tests the limits of their love and forces them to confront their darkest selves – outcasts, lovers, and ultimately serial killers. ‘Joel and Aubrey’ is a raw, visceral exploration of the human condition and the complexities of love and morality.
